Origins

THE ARTIST was beginning to get very tired of using thin pencils on the draft, and of having no impact: once or twice she had dipped the brush into the ink pot her mentor was using, but it had no control or portability in it, “and what is the use of a tool,” thought the artist, “without boldness or permanence?”

Either the stroke was very broad, or it dried very quickly, for she had plenty of time as she drew to look about her, and to wonder what was going to be created next. First, she tried to look down and see where the line was coming to, but it was too dark to see underneath : then she looked at the tip of the pen, and noticed that it was filled with fibers and solvents: here and there she saw sketches and ideas hung upon walls.

“Well!” thought the designer to herself, “after such a line as this, I shall think nothing of using cheap ballpoints! How brave they'll all think me at the studio!”

Impact

The ink was not a bit faded, and it stood out on the page in a moment : she looked down, but it was all dried instantly; before her was another blank canvas, and the creative concept was still in sight, hurrying to capture it.

There were sketches all round the hall, but they were all rough, and when she had inked all the way down one side and up the other, defining every shape, she walked proudly down the middle, wondering how she was ever to erase it again.
